Haunted Scarecrow

I talked with Pops in the basement of the 505 Food Court, downtown Albuquerque, and he put me to work decorating in the dinosaur room. I painted most of the walls and made a large dog skeleton prop become a huge mangy/decomposed dog, which we then placed as attacking our second, unfinished dinosaur. As the first room in the haunt, the dino room had an almost soothing feel to it (don’t have good pictures of the room with the house lights down). My acting scare as an imprisoned explorer, caught many people off guard. Always satisfying to get jumps and screams in a haunt, and then sometimes they laugh hard. I laugh whenever I walk through a haunt, and I don’t understand how some people get so scared they can barely get through the first couple of rooms. I practiced meditation in between scares, to help pass the many hours in my spot. Great team at Haunted Scarecrow, and this year’s haunt was much better than the last few years. (Check out “The horror…” page for details on the props.)

Morgue & Krypt Horror Fest

I volunteered to help with this year’s horror fest, and I had never been to any type of horror convention besides this. I got to sit at a booth with P.J. Soles (Halloween, Rock’N’Roll High School, and more) and her husband, Rob. Had a great time talking with them, listening to fans who wanted to express their admiration for P.J. and getting photos autographed, and taking pictures of fans with P.J. Events like this are an interesting dichotomy of gruesome horror and love of the horror genre shared by the fans. It felt like being small part of a world-wide family. The place was often packed with fans, many of them there to see The Terrifier – Art the Clown. I also got a chance to talk with actor Ashley Lawrence from the Hellraiser franchise. I talked with some other volunteers, some of who were part of Haunted Scarecrow haunted house productions, and was invited to possibly participate in this year’s haunt.

Another Short Film Win

Here’s my latest bizarre short film, “Bro Down Low” which was an official selection at this year’s Madrid (NM) Film Festival, and it won the Best Comedy award! Happy for this although I think the genre is really more drama/thriller/horror, but there are some comedic moments. Anyway – link to the movie below…

Chupacabra From Planet Zar

So excited to have been part of this production – writing, props, Chupacabra costume, and helping with set creation and strike! The cast and crew were a great team of people to work with. Video of the performance is now online! Follow this link https://youtu.be/C3u14b0tTz0 to Theater of Death’s YouTube Channel with the entire performance broken up into six parts, AND you can see most of the previous year’s performances as well! You can also see the complete uninterrupted recording of the show on my YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/@seanhall6409/videos. T-shirts available at – https://www.theaterofdeath.org/product-page/t-shirt. Check out my Theater Props page for the making of the props and Chupacabra costume. Thank you, Joe West, for keeping Theater of Death alive!

OffCenter & Joe Munley’s Puppet Theater

These puppet show performances are at OffCenter, a community art hive located in downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico. Joe Munley has been hosting this group for over 60 monthly performances that occur during Artwalk, which occurs on the first Friday of each month (usually). When Joe West from Theater of Death asked me to come up with an act for his Vaudephil summer performances, I came up with a one-man, macabre puppet show. I stopped by on one Artwalk evening to check out an OffCenter performance (which wasn’t actually happening that night), and see if I could get some advice about operating two rod arms with one hand. I met Joe and some other members, and then began attending their weekly Tuesday meetings. This is a collaborate writing process, where participants spitball ideas based on the upcoming OffCenter theme for the month. The performances below were mostly written by me after taking spitball notes and trying to incorporate as many of the participants ideas as I could into one story. https://www.offcenterarts.org/

Puppets?

On August 9th, 2024 I performed a one-man, one-time-only macabre puppet show called Love After Death/Don’t Eat the Baby. (Sorry the video quality is not better)

Never foresaw myself being involved with puppetry, but I am now. I’ve been working with OffCenter’s Puppet Theater Group for the past two months. They put on a public performance usually every first Friday as part of the Albuquerque ArtWalk downtown. Here’s a link to the Sept. 6, 24 show:

In August, we performed a play written by a young woman with Autism, and I now it’s available online.

Here’s a newspaper article regarding the Puppet Theater Group: https://www.abqjournal.com/lifestyle/pulling-strings-puppet-theater-group-preps-for-september-show/article_b31b7b66-59be-11ef-ac6e-b75353a509c4.html

Check out my “Puppet Theater Props” tab for details on those.

I remember going to the First Annual Madrid, NM Film Festival in 2018 and being very impressed by a short film called The Love That Wouldn’t Die by Devon Hawkes Ludlow. It was done with small sets and puppets. That was seed for inspiration in some of my future filmmaking, as I typically make films by myself and don’t have actors to work with (other than my wife). So, my short films Thank You for Calling and Robot Toilet do have forms of puppetry in them. Here’s a link to Ludlow’s zombie musical The Love That Wouldn’t Die:

Theater of Death: The Early Years

Theater of Death short plays performed between 2014-2022, and black and white photos, are in this entertaining paperback. I have been a fan of this theater company since their first run and have seen every show. The combination of horror and humor, in a historic old theater in the small ex-mining town of Madrid, NM, has given me great memories and adoration for this intimate, live performance. And I have been very fortunate to have some of my plays performed and printed in this book. (I also did the editing).

Death is a Comin’

Big thanks to the 6th Annual Madrid Film Festival for choosing my music video, “Death is a Comin'”, as an official selection! YouTube link below. (Please be advised that near the beginning of the video there is a theatrical representation of a live human birth).

Wrote several short plays and skits for Theater of Death this year but, unfortunately, for various circumstances, Theater of Death will not be performing for this Fall Season.

2022 What Did I Do?

Hooray!! After a long Covid hiatus, Theater of Death returns, performing in a new giant tent space. I had written a few short plays for the virus theme, and one of them was performed. I also got to work on costumes and props and helped backstage. Lots of work and sold-out shows. I also won the Palme d’Coal award at this year’s Madrid (NM) Film Festival for my short music video / sci fi horror film, Robot Toilet. YouTube link below.
